Although families may provide a sense of safety, comfort, and security to many, they can also be unhealthy, extremely conflictual, manipulative, or even abusive. Problems involving children and adolescents can usually benefit from therapy with family members, including parents and step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or anybody else considered family.

Family therapy can also be beneficial during difficult periods in life, including:

  • Divorce
  • Remarriage
  • The addition of a baby
  • Death or serious illness
  • Unemployment

Family counseling focuses on family members’ relationships to each other, as well as how the family functions as a unit. Addressing issues and changing how family members communicate with and relate to one another can have a significant effect on the entire family.
